Boca Grande Comes Back From the Morning Forward This October

"As the season quickly approaches, many island restaurants and shops are opening back up after a quiet September." That's how the Boca Beacon opened its October 1 list of reopening dates.

The schedule brings the island back from morning to night. On Gasparilla Island this fall, the breakfast counter came back before the dinner table, and the grocery came back before both evening kitchens. The upstairs dining room overlooking Charlotte Harbor comes back last, in November. If you're returning after the summer, or you stayed on through September, the island's first weeks of season run mostly in daylight.

Here is the order as the Boca Beacon published it, with a new arrival at Fiddler's Green added.

Date reported Business What comes back
Monday, Oct. 5 Bella Vida Daytime kitchen
Monday, Oct. 5 Aqua Boutique Retail
Tuesday, Oct. 6 Hudson's The island grocery
Thursday, Oct. 8 Sister's Lunch and dinner
Thursday, Oct. 8 Miller's Dockside Marina-side bar and grill
Friday, Oct. 9 Grande Stitches Retail
"Soon" Newlin's Mainely Gourmet Lunch
November Eagle Grille Fine dining above the marina
Opening, date not announced Savory Spoon Cafe 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Beacon reported these dates in advance as scheduled, and a quick call to confirm current hours is still the island way.

The first week belonged to breakfast and lunch

Bella Vida led the restaurant list, reopening Monday, Oct. 5. Its posted hours show what kind of kitchen opened the season. According to Bella Vida's own site, it runs 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. So the season's first restaurant reopening was a morning-and-midday room. On a Sunday it closes by 1 p.m.

The one newcomer this fall keeps nearly the same daytime hours. The Boca Beacon reported on October 8 that Savory Spoon Cafe is opening at the Fiddler's Green shopping center. On Monday, Oct. 5, the cafe was in its last round of inspections. The Coca-Cola vendor was on site getting the soda fountain running, and team leaders Anne Marie Bush and Cindy Clausen were setting up the outdoor eating area out front. The Beacon gave its hours as 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. No opening date had been published when the Beacon ran the item.

Put the two side by side and the island's newest restaurant and its first seasonal reopening keep almost the same day. Savory Spoon opens half an hour earlier than Bella Vida and closes half an hour later. That gives the island a second breakfast-and-lunch option just as the season's early arrivals start looking for one.

Shopping followed the same daytime pattern. Aqua Boutique reopened the same Monday as Bella Vida, and Grande Stitches was set to open for the season on Friday, Oct. 9. A Monday at Bella Vida followed by a stop at Aqua Boutique was one of the first full mornings the island could offer this season.

Tuesday restocked the island's kitchens

Hudson's was scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Boca Beacon lists it at 441 Park Ave. under "Restaurants, Grocery & Grab-n-Go." Its August 2024 seasonal roundup noted that Hudson's closed on Saturdays until October.

Hudson's carries more history than its place in the schedule suggests. A Boca Beacon history piece recounts that the island's grocery was first called Whidden's and only later Hudson's. When the island needed it after the 2022 hurricane, the Beacon reported that Hudson's Grocery supplied food and covered expenses for a hot-meal effort for the people rebuilding.

The grocery was set to come back on Tuesday, and the two dinner-capable restaurants on the list followed two days later. For anyone opening up a house after the summer, that gap mattered. The first evenings of this season were home-cooked ones, stocked from Park Avenue.

Thursday brought the evenings back

Dinner on the Beacon's list returned on Thursday, Oct. 8, when Sister's and Miller's Dockside were both scheduled to reopen.

Sister's is the Italian-American restaurant at 480 E. Railroad Ave. Its menu runs from lunch through dinner, with appetizers, salads, pizza and a children's menu along the way. The restaurant is named for its owners, twin sisters Lisa Ianita and Paula Marum, and Monty Caputo is the chef. The Boca Beacon once profiled the sisters as Batavia, New York, natives and devoted Buffalo Bills fans. With football season underway, a Thursday reopening sets that room up for the long run of fall weekends.

Miller's Dockside sits at 220 Harbor Drive, at the Boca Grande Marina. Its own site describes a casual sports bar where the boats in the marina basin are part of the view. It serves lunch and dinner and keeps a pub menu. It shares that address with Eagle Grille upstairs, which brings up the one restaurant still missing from the list.

The dining room upstairs waits for November

The Boca Beacon's schedule has Eagle Grille reopening for the season in November. It is the fine-dining room on the upper floor at 220 Harbor Drive, with water views across the marina and out to Charlotte Harbor. The Beacon has profiled the pair as stops for lunch, dinner or a drink. For about a month this fall, the casual room downstairs is open while the formal room upstairs stays dark.

Eagle Grille's website mentions a Thursday, October 8 date with no year attached. That date matches Miller's Dockside's reopening, not this season's November date for the upstairs room. For an anniversary dinner or a table for visiting family in October, the Beacon's November timing is the one to plan around.

Newlin's Mainely Gourmet sits between these two pacings. The Beacon said on October 1 that it would be "opening soon" and gave no date. Newlin's lists its store at 446 4th St. The Boca Grande Fishing Guides Association's dining page describes it as a daily lunch stop for lobster rolls, sandwiches and soups. When it opens, the island gains another midday option, which fits the daylight-first shape of this season.

Reading the week as one island

Taken as a whole, the order runs like this:

  1. Mornings first. Bella Vida reopened on Oct. 5 with hours ending at 2:30 p.m., and Savory Spoon Cafe at Fiddler's Green is preparing to open with 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours.
  2. Groceries next. Hudson's on Park Avenue was set to reopen on Oct. 6.
  3. Evenings by Thursday. Sister's on East Railroad Avenue and Miller's Dockside at the marina were set to reopen Oct. 8.
  4. Fine dining in November. Eagle Grille reopens upstairs at 220 Harbor Drive.

Over five days in early October, the island got back a breakfast room, a grocery and two dinner options among the places the Beacon listed. The formal evening at the top of the marina comes a few weeks later. Fall on Boca Grande starts as a daytime season. That suits the long Gulf mornings and a lunch that runs into the afternoon. A white-tablecloth dinner is the last part of the season to return.
